The Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) is sponsored by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and includes several patient care measures that help reduce the risk of infection and other complications. In early 2010, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama will begin using hospital SCIP data to tie a physician with admitting privileges to the hospital’s performance. The attributed hospital performance will be shown under the “Quality" tab. For the hospital performance to show on the doctor’s web page, the doctor would have to perform more than five procedures combined in any of the surgical episode surgeries matching a SCIP surgery.
