holiday money fight

Hiding your holiday spending because you want to surprise your significant other with an exceptional present? Great.

Hiding your holiday spending because you know the cost of that gift will start a major argument? Not so great.

Unfortunately, it’s all too common to bicker about your budget this time of year, according to a new study by McGraw Hill Federal Credit Union. Nearly half of all heterosexual couples—and 40% of all couples—who took the survey said that they fight with their partner over how much to spend during the season.

Dishonesty only ups the tension: one in four couples fessed up to lying to their partners about their holiday spending, while 10% of couples have at least one partner who has taken out a secret credit card. Shawn Gilfedder, president of McGraw Hill Federal Credit Union, told MarketWatch that the deception is “a sign that you have a problem and the problem is probably a lot bigger than managing your budget.”
