Lure summer’s frequent flyers to your window for your budding naturalists to observe and identify. Start by making a simple wooden birdhouse (like the one at skiptomylou.org/diy-birdhouse). Then personalize it with weather-resistant milk paint.
For a vintage look
Mix Federal Blue paint to a watery consistency and apply with a spray bottle. Apply a second, thicker layer with a block of wood. When dry, use a dry brush to apply pale green paint, then sand to blend colors.
For a graphic look
Use a roller to apply one or more colors you like; let dry. Apply sticker stencils (a sign store will create a personalized stencil from your child’s drawing) and dab a thick second paint color over the stencils. When almost dry, peel off the stickers. Hang your house for all the bird world to enjoy!
