Watercolor, Step 1

Watercolor painting might look tricky but by following these straightforward steps, you and your kids will be painting like French masters in no time.

You'll need:

A set of watercolor paints
Small round brushes
Sheets of watercolor paper

Free-form draw a flower in pencil on watercolor paper. Include broad petals and a space in the center.

Watercolor, Step 2

Paint the petals. No need to stick within the lines too much, or be too exact, since watercolor spreads on the paper as it dries.

Watercolor, Step 3

Add shadows and shading to the flower using an adjacent color from the color wheel. For this blue flower, we highlighted parts of the petals in purple.

Watercolor, Step 4

Let the flower partially dry. Then paint the center using a compliment color, like orange. Pop the colors even more by adding a few drops of an additional compliment; we used yellow.

Watercolor, Step 5

Frame the flower by loosly painting a border in the same compliment color as you used for the center.
