The State Employees' Health Insurance Plan

The State Employees' Health Insurance Plan (SEHIP) is basic hospital medical coverage administered by BlueCross BlueShield of Alabama (BCBS) with prescription benefits administered by Prime Therapeutics. This plan is offered to state employees who do not have other health insurance coverage available to them. It is intended to help you and your covered dependents pay for healthcare costs.

Supplemental Coverage Plan

The State Employees’ Supplemental Coverage Plan (Supplemental Plan) is administered by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. If you enroll in coverage through an eligible employer group health plan, you can opt out of the SEHIP and elect supplemental coverage through the SEIB, at no charge.

• The Supplemental Plan will cover most of your out-of-pocket expenses that your primary Other Group Health Insurance (OGHI) does not cover.
• You may not enroll in the Supplemental Plan if your OGHI is with the SEHIP, Public Education Employees Health Insurance Program, Local Government Health Insurance Program, the Marketplace, TRICARE, Medicaid or Medicare.
• The State Employees’ Supplemental Plan will not supplement your primary health plan if it is a high deductible plan (i.e. a plan with in-network deductibles of $1,700 or more for single coverage or $3,400 or more for family coverage.
